WATCH: Koenigsegg Jesko Accidentally Smashes Gotland Ring Lap Record

A Koenigsegg Jesko Attack has accidentally set the lap record for Sweden's 4.5-mile-long Gotland Ring race track. It managed to make the run in a blistering 2:56.97, smashing the previous record by several seconds. The last recorded fastest lap for this track was achieved by a Porsche 911 GT3 RS MR at 3:04.83.

The funny thing was the Jesko Attack's Gotland Ring run was only intended to showcase the capabilities of the track-focused hypercar and to shoot marketing materials. Imagine what it might do if the Swedes had prepared for an all-out assault. Koenigsegg test driver Niklas Lilja was the one behind the tiller for the record-breaking run.

RaceLogic verified the new Gotland Ring record. The ambient temperature during this lap was around 64 degrees Fahrenheit, and the vehicle used the equivalent of 93-octane fuel in the United States, which means that it was not running anywhere near full power. With this sort of fuel running through its system, the 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 can churn out 1,281 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque, but with some E85 ethanol fuel, over 1,600 hp is possible, and even that figure is somewhat conservative. Just as remarkable is that the power plant only weighs 200 pounds and is one of the fastest-revving production engines ever made, with only the GMA T.50's Cosworth V12 spinning faster.

As the Attack variant of the Jesko, the hypercar gets a huge rear wing instead of a drag-reducing fin, and the front end has a much larger splitter. Together, over 3,000 lbs of downforce can be generated.

According to the Swedish car maker, Lilja only pushed the vehicle to around 90% of its potential, telling us it can record an even faster lap.

With its shining performance around the Gotland Ring, many folks who watched the video say that the Jesko might be able to take on the Nurburgring lap record. Christian von Koenigsegg has teased such a thing in the past, so we'll be keeping our ears to the ground.
