The 2024 New York Auto Show press preview is in the bag and the public show has begun, and that means only one thing: Our work here is done. But really, we've been done since about mid-morning on Wednesday. As you'll see from the paltry selection of galleries below, the 2024 New York Auto Show wasn't much of one. And what there was? Well, in a word, it was Hyundai.
For a moment, it seemed like we were past the worst of the dealer markups. I even found a GR Corolla at MSRP, but it looks like some dealerships are still up to old tricks. One Reddit user recently posted that his local California Hyundai store was selling an Ioniq 5 N for a ridiculous $20,000 markup, adding almost 30 percent to the EV's MSRP.
The Hyundai Group refuses to release its kung-fu grip on winning prestigious vehicle awards, especially those for electric vehicles. In 2020, Kia took the overall World Car of the Year (WCOTY) title with the Telluride, won World Performance Car with the EV6 GT, and won the World Urban Car category with the Kia Soul EV. In 2021, after the Hyundai Group walked away with nothing but a free lunch, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 won the 2022 World Car of the Year laurels, plus World Electric Vehicle and World Car Design of the Year, followed in 2023 by the Hyundai Ioniq 6 winning the same three awards. Kia returns to the top step today, the new EV9 announced at the New York Auto Show as the 2024 World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle. Because the South Koreans like to do this in threes, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N won World Performance Car.
The facelifted 2025 Hyundai Tucson debuts at the New York Auto Show, with a series of upgrades. The compact SUV looks sharper than before in regular, N Line, and XRT trims, but the highlight is the redesigned interior injected with the latest technology from Hyundai.
Of all the midsize pickups on the market, the Hyundai Santa Cruz was among the most crossover-like, sharing a lot in common with the Tucson. For 2025, the design team has decided to toughen the Santa Cruz up a bit to make it look more like a traditional pickup truck, Hyundai revealed at the New York International Auto Show, where the truck made its global debut.“More vertical lines and redesigned headlamps bookend a menacing new grille incorporating larger chambers,” said Brad Arnold, Hyundai North America’s senior design manager.
The 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz was just revealed alongside the also-refreshed Tucson at the New York Auto Show, and the little pickup is being treated to a similar array of updates as the crossover it shares a platform with.
