Top 10 selling cars in FY24: WagonR retains crown as Baleno, Swift follow; Nexon drives SUV demand | Exclusive

The popular Maruti Suzuki WagonR retained its crown as the largest-selling car in India for the third straight year in FY24 even as the Tata Nexon emerged as the best-selling SUV for the third consecutive year.

With the SUV segment accounting for over 50% of the cars sold in the domestic market in FY24, there were five SUV models among the 10 best-selling cars in India during the fiscal. Also, there were three hatchbacks and one each sedan and MPV.

In FY24, the segment share in the passenger vehicle (PV) industry stood at 50.4% for SUV, 27.8% for hatchback, 9.3% for MPV, 9% for sedan and 3.5% for van. While SUV, MPV and van segments witnessed a growth, hatchback and sedan segments registered a decline in their market share.

While Maruti Suzuki India had six models among the 10 best-selling in FY24, Tata Motors had two. Hyundai Motor India and Mahindra & Mahindra had one each.

The Maruti Suzuki WagonR continued to rule the car market in India with sales of 200,177 units in FY24. It was the largest-selling car in India in FY22 and FY23 as well. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno was next at 195,607 units and it was very closely followed by the Maruti Suzuki Swift at 195,321 units.

That Maruti Suzuki India rules the hatchback segment is clearly visible from the volumes of the WagonR, Baleno and Swift.

The Tata Nexon maintained its hold over the SUV segment, emerging as the numero uno model in FY24 at 171,697 units. It was also the top-selling SUV in India in FY22 and FY23. The Tata Punch carried on with its impressive run, clocking sales of 170,076 units. Up next was the Tata Nexon-rival Maruti Suzuki Brezza at 169,897 units.

The sedan segment was proudly represented by the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, which posted impressive volumes of 164,517 units in FY24.

The Hyundai Creta emerged as the best-selling mid-size SUV in India in FY24 at 161,653 units. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga was the sole MPV with sales of 149,757 units during the fiscal. The Mahindra Scorpio, including N and Classic, came in at the 10th position, garnering volumes of 141,462 units in FY24.
