Sur Mesure Chiron Super Sport Honors Bugatti's First Le Mans Race Car

French automaker Bugatti has revealed a superb Chiron Super Sport with special touches from the Sur Mesure department. The Hommage T50S was inspired by the incredible Type 50S, the first car Bugatti fielded at Le Mans.

Unlike the lightweight and agile racers like the Type 35, the Type 50S was the high point of Bugatti's big-engined vehicles. The 5.0-liter supercharged eight-cylinder produced around 247 horsepower, which was incredible for 1931. This was Bugatti's first engine with dual overhead camshafts.

The eight-cylinder motor transformed the Type 50S into a serious machine. A stylish luxury vehicle that was as quick as contemporary race cars. As such, Jean Bugatti was convinced it could nab a win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Nearly 100 years later, a customer approached Bugatti with the desire to create a black-on-black Chiron Super Sport that could honor the company's rich history. He fell in love with the story of the Type 50S, commissioning a vehicle that pays tribute to the original.

Painted black, the exterior of the Hommage T50S wears contrasting '5' racing numbers on both doors, while the spoiler's underside depicts Circuit de la Sarthe as it would have been in 1931. A 'Le Mans 1931' script can be seen here and on the pronounced rear arches.

But Bugatti's Sir Mesure department didn't stop there. The engine bay features a unique engine-turned ornamental pattern called «Perlee,» which was once a calling card of Bugatti and Monsieur Bugatti himself. This is a subtle nod to the Type 50S' advanced dual-overhead cams.

The engine-turned look wasn't easy to achieve, but the Sur Mesure team went to great lengths to achieve this unique finish. The circular design pattern had to be perfectly proportional and withstand intense engine heat and wear for «decades and generations.»

Inside, the elegant Chiron Super Sport has been trimmed with black leather upholstery, but it is by no means somber. White diamond stitching contrasts beautifully and matches the gorgeous recreation of the Type 50S, which takes pride of place on the door panels. 'Le Mans 1931' has also been stitched into the headrests. Elsewhere, aluminum and Perlee inlays enliven the interior.
