From Tata Nexon to Mahindra Scorpio, SUV buyers opting for Indian brands

The SUV buyers in the country are increasingly opting for models by the Indian original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), be it Tata Motors or Mahindra & Mahindra, as can be seen from the volumes of the Nexon, Punch and Scorpio in FY24.

Among the five largest-selling SUVs in FY24, there were three models from Indian OEMs, and one each from Japanese and Korean companies.

The best-selling SUV in India in FY24 was the Tata Nexon with sales of 171,697 units. This was the third consecutive year when the Tata Nexon was the top-selling SUV in the country. The compact SUV's price starts at Rs 8.15 lakh and goes up to Rs 15.80 lakh (ex-showroom). You can have the Nexon.ev between Rs 14.49 lakh and Rs 19.49 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Tata Nexon was closely followed by its sibling, the Tata Punch, which garnered sales of 170,076 units in FY24. Sitting in the price bracket of Rs 6.13 lakh to Rs 10.20 lakh (ex-showroom), the Tata Punch was the largest-selling car in March. The Punch.ev price hovers from Rs 10.99 lakh to Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza, which directly rivals the Tata Nexon, had the third best volumes among the SUVs at 169,897 units in FY24. The best-selling Maruti Suzuki SUV in India comes in the price range of Rs 8.34 lakh to Rs 14.14 lakh (ex-showroom).

For a very long time now, the Hyundai Creta has been leading the mid-size SUV segment. It did the same in FY24 with volumes of 161,653 units. The Hyundai Creta price in India starts at Rs 11 lakh and goes up to Rs 20.15 lakh (ex-showroom). The performance-focused Creta N Line can be had between Rs 16.82 lakh and Rs 20.45 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Mahindra Scorpio, including N and Classic, garnered its best-ever annual sales of 141,462 units in FY24. The Mahindra Scorpio-N is priced between Rs 13.60 lakh and Rs 24.54 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Mahindra Scorpio Classic costs Rs 13.59 lakh to Rs 17.35 lakh (ex-showroom).
