Koenigsegg is a rare kind of automotive manufacturer. Other sporting marques like Porsche, Lamborghini, and Ferrari have all succumbed to the winds of change, building SUVs to sate the demands of the cossetted masses. The Swedish company has instead stuck to building hypercars. Its latest effort has been the construction of a test vehicle for the Jesko Absolut, which aims to be the fastest Koenigsegg yet.
Boutique Swedish automaker Koenigsegg recently unveiled the production version of its Gemera hypercar. It's a hybrid, powered by two available combustion engines as well as a single, powerful electric motor known as the «Dark Matter.» How is it so small and so powerful? We don't have extensive details of the device, but we can tell a lot by what Christian Von Koenigsegg, the company's founder, has had to say about it.
Koenigsegg builds some of the most technically interesting and impressive cars in the world. They're extremely rare, fast, cool, and often cost millions of dollars. The automaker's founder and chief executive, Christian von Koenigsegg, knows that's not ideal from an average enthusiast's perspective, and claims he wants to make more affordable cars. In conversation with him at The Quail during Monterey Car Week, Koenigsegg pointed to McLaren as proof that this is no simple task.
Koenigsegg uses a number of advanced manufacturing techniques to build its low-volume hypercars, like 3D printing. It farms out a ton of printed metal parts, but it also does liquid resin-based stereolithography, or SLA, in-house. The method uses ultraviolet light to cure photosensitive liquid resin in a number of small layers. It's popular in the hobby space now (even I have an SLA machine) but the makeup of just any commercial resin isn't good enough for the cutting-edge Swedish automaker. In conversation with Christian von Koenigsegg at The Quail during Monterey Car Week, he told me they mix their own resin, and no, I can't buy any.
Unlike a lot of other low-volume manufacturers, Koenigsegg has always prided itself on building much of its technology in-house, rather than relying on external suppliers. It's continuing this trend as it builds towards electric drive to its hypercar lineup and has announced its new cutting edge Quark EV drive unit as a part of that push.
