Japanese automaker retains crown as top-seller globally

A factory owned by a Toyota subsidiary has been raided by Japanese transport officials just days after the car giant admitted to cheating on engine tests.
For the fourth consecutive year in a row, Toyota has posted an annual sales record of 11.2 million vehicles for 2023.
Men piloting the GR Yaris have won the Driver's Championship at the top level of the World Rally Championship for the past five years: Estonian Ott Tanak in 2019, Frenchman Sebastien Ogier in 2020 and 2021, Finn Kalle Rovanpera in 2022 and 2023. At the end of the 2022 season, in celebration, Toyota created two special editions of the GR Yaris in Japanese-market RZ High Performance trim, one of the cars tuned by Ogier, the other by Rovanpera. TOKYO — Japanese transport officials raided a Toyota-affiliated plant Tuesday after the company admitted to cheating on engine testing, as Toyota Motor Corp. reported it sold over 11 million vehicles in 2023 to retain its status as the world’s top car manufacturer.

Toyota has detailed two special editions of the recently upgraded GR Yaris hot hatchback, which will go on sale in limited numbers later this year.
