TOKYO — Japan's Daihatsu Motor said on Monday it will streamline the way it reports on development and certification to Toyota Motor, as the parent company increases oversight of its compact car division and seeks to overcome a safety test certification scandal.

It looks as though the third model to get the 1.6-liter turbo might have a Lexus badge. Unveiled as a concept in January at the Tokyo Auto Salon, the LBX Morizo RR has a high chance of reaching production.
The turbocharged, 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine inaugurated by the rally-bred GR Yaris and also found in the GR Corolla could make its way to a Lexus. The brand put the engine in a concept unveiled earlier in 2024, and a recent report claims the model is headed to production.
Volvo recently built its last car with a diesel engine, but Toyota sees things differently. Although the popularity of the oil-burner has gone down in recent years, the Japanese automaker claims this type of engine still has a long future. Toyota Australia sales and marketing boss Sean Hanley believes that "diesel, despite popular commentary, is not dead. It's got a while to go, diesel, so it's not going to die off anytime soon."
Toyota has been working on a new research and development center since April 2018 in Shimoyama where it opened a 3.3-mile version of the Nürburgring track a year later. Work on the R&D site has now been finalized, and there's another connection to the famous German circuit. This time, it's inside the building where future models are being developed.
Toyota's noble effort to save the internal combustion engine is producing some interesting new technology. The automaker has been testing a filter system that can actually capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. But it has a long way to go before it's ready for mainstream production.
