Cloaked in orange and blue camouflage, the prototype hints at a robust design reminiscent of popular bakkies already on our market – no massive upsets from the silhouette then. While specific exterior details remain under wraps, certain features stand out. The dual-lens headlights and wide wheel arches contribute to its appearance. Roof rails, a short bed, and traditional door handles further enhance its utility. BYD describes the bakkie as a ‘mid- to full-size truck,’ indicating a larger footprint compared to competitors like the Ford Ranger. Inside, the dual-cab layout promises ample space for five occupants, along with a generously sized bed for cargo. Advanced technology, on par with BYD’s passenger lineup, is expected to adorn the interior, enhancing both comfort and convenience.

The plug-in hybrid variant is projected to deliver impressive figures, boasting a combined range exceeding 1 000 km. Additionally, it’s anticipated to offer an electric-only range of approximately 100 km, making it suitable for short commutes and urban driving.

As for its debut, the plug-in hybrid version is expected to hit the market by the end of 2024, with the all-electric variant likely following in 2025.

In terms of competition, BYD’s bakkie aims to challenge established players like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux and time will
