Tesla builds six millionth car

Tesla has produced its six millionth car – about one million of which rolled off the production line in the past six month.

The six-millionth car was a Model Y in Stealth Grey, the company announced in a video on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“Produced our 6 millionth car! Thank you to our owners and teams around the world for your support and hard work — it truly matters,” Tesla said.

By September 2023, Tesla had produced five million cars, its first coming in the form of the Tesla Roadster back in 2008 – five years after the company’s founding.

Though a significant number for the electric-car manufacturer, by comparison, in the same month Toyota announced it had hit 300 million vehicles produced in its 88-year history.

In Australia, the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV are the only current vehicles in the company's range, though the Model S and Model X have been sold locally in previous years.

As of last week, there are now 100,000 Tesla electric cars on Australian roads – nearly half of which were delivered last year alone.

The US electric-car giant announced the milestone of «100k Tesla vehicles on the road in Australia» on social media on Thursday afternoon, after its first local vehicle delivery was made in July 2010.

More than half of those – close to 53,000 vehicles – have been reported as delivered between the start of 2023 and the end of February 2024 – including around 46,000 last year.

This week, more undisguised images of the Model 3 Performance – or 'Ludicrous' as it may be known – have surfaced online ahead of an official unveiling, which is believed to be imminent.

Despite its growing sales success, it has been far from smooth sailing for the electric-car company. In January 2024, Tesla was forced to recall 1.6 million of its vehicles in China due to issues with its steering software and door-locking systems, the BBC reports.

The recall includes the Model S, X, 3 and Y, 7538 of which were imported.

Late last year Tesla was forced to issue a 'recall' for two million cars in the US due to problems with its Autopilot software – though it was addressed with a downloadable software update that did not require a visit to
