Polestar Extreme Fast-Charging To Add 100 Miles Range In 5 Minutes

At Polestar Day in Los Angeles, California, StoreDot and Polestar have announced new extreme fast charging (XFC) capability for future EVs, promising the ability to restore 100 miles of range in just five minutes of charging (100-in-5), with zero battery degradation.

The innovation is courtesy of new '100-in-5' cell technology that could revolutionize EV ownership when they find their way into forthcoming models from the Swedish EV manufacturer. The technology will be fully showcased in a Polestar 5 prototype as early as next year, with the two companies expecting it to reach production viability soon thereafter.

For reference, the current fastest charging EV is the Lucid Air, which can add 300 miles of range in 20 minutes. Polestar and StoreDot's technology would add the same range in 25% less time — just 15 minutes.

Anything under 15 minutes effectively becomes as close as could be considered negligible to combustion, and the 15-minute barrier is the target Porsche is still dreaming of. Meanwhile, Toyota is pioneering solid-state batteries that will take 10 minutes to charge but will only arrive in 2027. Polestar could beat them all to the punch.

Once 100-in-5 technology is proven viable next year, StoreDot's next goals are 100-in-3 by 2028 and 100-in-2 technology in 2032. This will be achieved through StoreDot's focus on silicon-dominant XFC, semi-solid state tech, and post-lithium architecture. Such technological breakthroughs could see a 500-mile Lucid Air recharge fully in just 10 minutes.

«This is a huge step for StoreDot and a strong endorsement that our ground-breaking technology is readying for mass production,» proclaims Dr Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot. «We are extremely pleased and proud that Polestar aims to be the first automotive company to showcase our extreme fast charging battery cells in a full-scale, drivable prototype.»

It's worth noting that the partnership hasn't arisen out of nowhere and that Polestar is a StoreDot investor.

«StoreDot was our first financial investment in another company, and we have been collaborating with them to apply their advanced technology in proof-of-concept Polestar cars,» says Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of
