Polestar 4 Will Have Autonomous Driving Tech That Should Worry Tesla

The Polestar 4 was revealed earlier this year as the EV company's quickest model ever, and now it's confirmed the coupe SUV will be equipped with next-generation LiDAR technology from leading automotive technology company Luminar.

Recently, Polestar announced that the 4 would be the first production car to integrate Mobileye's Chauffeur autonomous driving technology, setting the standard for the next generation of Polestars in terms of autonomous driving. The combined expertise of Luminar and Mobileye will deliver eyes-off, point-to-point, autonomous highway driving and eyes-on automated driving for other environments. The Polestar 5 four-door GT is also set to adopt LiDAR sensors from Luminar.

Polestar's investment into the best possible automated driving technologies will deliver a greater level of accuracy, and the more accurate these systems are, the safer autonomous driving is.

From launch, the Polestar 4 was announced with a full-surround camera-based SuperVision system. Three EyeQ6 processors, a front-facing imaging radar from Mobileye, and front-facing LiDAR from Luminar will give the EV high sensing and artificial intelligence capabilities. Using lasers, the LiDAR system is much more accurate than cameras, creating a detailed 3D map of the car's surroundings.

Luminar has great faith in its LiDAR senses compared to some rivals' more basic systems; last year, the company's CEO, Austin Russell, said Tesla's camera-only systems would not achieve full self-driving. At the time, the EX90 SUV was being launched with its own LiDAR sensors.

In the EX90, the LiDAR sensor can detect objects up to 820 feet away while also being able to spot objects in dimly lit environments. As Russell said at the time, LiDAR offers «centimeter-level precision,» something cameras alone can't achieve.

This level of accuracy should also be on display in the Polestar 4.

«Polestar 4 comes with the highly advanced Mobileye SuperVision ADS from the start, and we look forward to expanding that with Mobileye Chauffeur in the future,» said Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO. «Being able to add Luminar's industry-leading LiDAR to the platform's development increases the strong link between our
