Maruti is working on making 6 airbags standard on some models, says MD and CEO

The country's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India, is working on offering six airbags as standard on some of its models, according to a top company official.

Replying to a question from India Today regarding six airbags at FY24 financial results press conference, Maruti Suzuki India MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said: «We are working towards having six airbags as standard on some models already.»

However, Takeuchi did not name these models.

«We will continue this for the models to be introduced in the Indian market. That's our position with regard to six airbags,» Takeuchi noted.

Although Maruti cars like the Baleno, Fronx, Brezza and Grand Vitara have six airbags, these are not standard across all the variants.

The flagship Invicto and the Jimny get six airbags in all the variants that they are available in. However, these two vehicles only have the top-spec Zeta and Alpha variants, unlike majority of the Maruti Suzuki Nexa cars that are offered in Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha trims.

The new-generation Maruti Suzuki Swift, which will be launched in India on May 9, is expected to be the first small car from the company to get six airbags in all its variants.

Carmakers like Hyundai Motor India and Kia India are already offering six airbags in all variants of all their cars.
