Learner driver allegedly detected speeding 100km/h over the limit

A 17-year-old learner driver in New South Wales has been arrested and charged with multiple traffic offences after he was allegedly caught speeding at 100km/h over the legal limit.

NSW Police say the Ford Falcon sedan was detected driving at 170km/h on a signposted 70km/h stretch of road in Hoxton Park – a suburb 28km west of Sydney.

Highway Patrol allege the offender refused to stop for police, which resulted in a pursuit along Hoxton Park Road.

Authorities claim the novice motorist drove through a red light and was driving without a supervised driver, instead being accompanied by a 17-year-old passenger.

Police alleged drugs were discovered in the vehicle after the driver and vehicle were searched when he eventually came to a stop.

Officers say the 17-year-old male was arrested and charged with multiple offences relating to police pursuit, dangerously speeding in public, unaccompanied learner driving, failure to display learner plates and possession of an illegal substance.

The driver's permit was suspended on the spot and the number plates to the vehicle were confiscated for three months – with the offender due to appear in a local court at a later unspecified date.
