FL5 Type R Gets Mugen Group A Goodies for Better Performance

Already an impressive driver oriented hot hatch, the Honda Civic Type R has been given some extra flair with a Mugen Group A upgrade which simplifies the tailpipe arrangement and adds some key aero bits for improved performance.

The Japanese tuning company showcased a range of upgraded parts for the current-generation Civic Type R at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January, and now some of these upgrades are available for purchase. The highlight is a comprehensive aero kit that enhances the car’s aggressive aesthetic while improving its performance. This kit includes a front lip spoiler, corner intake garnishes on the front fascia, side skirts, a rear under spoiler, and a new, even larger rear wing. You can’t miss the single-exit exhaust tip centered at the rear, though Mugen indicates that an exhaust upgrade is coming later. The 19-inch wheels, designed in collaboration with BBS, complete the look and reduce the car’s overall weight.

A Brief Dive Into The History Of Honda’s Type R

These upgrades are more than just cosmetic. Mugen claims that with all the new aero components installed, the Civic Type R gains 25% more downforce. The BBS wheels also reduce the car’s weight by 10 kg in total. Considering the Civic Type R is already the fastest front-wheel-drive production car at the Nürburgring and the reigning CAR Performance Shootout Champion, these enhancements could boost its performance even further.

The interior has also received some attention from Mugen. There’s an Alcantara shift knob and custom floor mats for a touch of style, while the carbon fiber center console offers a slight weight reduction. Mugen’s MS-C front seats are aggressively bolstered for enhanced support during spirited driving. Mugen’s performance parts list also includes upgraded dampers and two types of performance brake pads—one for sport driving and the other for competition use. The dampers are currently available, but the brake pads will not be on sale until the end of July. The large rear spoiler is expected in September, and the wheels in August. The single-tip exhaust is still in development, with no release date
