This weekend saw the final race of the 2023 F1 season occur in Abu Dhabi. While the race itself had a few bright moments, it was ultimately pretty dull (especially compared to the 2021 season finale), with Verstappen securing yet another victory, Charles Leclerc finishing second, and George Russell in third after a five-second penalty was given to Sergio Perez for pulling a Ford Mustang at a Cars and Coffee and plowing right into Lando Norris (who finished fifth).
LAS VEGAS — Considering the drama and intrigue that has surrounded the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix up to this point, the fact that qualifying for the first Formula 1 race in Sin City since 1982 went off without incident is noteworthy. After the time allotted for qualifying came to an end, the Ferrari pair of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz crossed the line in first and second place. But due to the 10-position penalty assessed after Sainz was forced to a halt after hitting a water drain cover that was dislodged during the first practice session the previous evening, he will start in the 12th position. Just 0.044 seconds separated the two Ferrari drivers.
Red Bull's Sergio Perez had a rough weekend, despite the 2023 Formula 1 Mexico Grand Prix being his hometown race. Prior to the race, Perez had a less-than-ideal qualifying, finishing in fifth behind AlphaTauri's Daniel Ricciardo, who hadn't raced in weeks, following a broken hand suffered in the Dutch grand prix. Then, in the opening lap, Perez collided with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc—who started on pole—putting him out of the race just as it started.

During yesterday's sprint race, Red Bull's Max Verstappen clinched the 2023 F1 drivers' championship title, his third in a row, which means all other drivers must now fight for second. Unfortunately for Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton—one of those drivers in the hunt for second—a crash in the first corner of the opening lap jettisoned his wheel and put him out of the race.
