Another year, another new Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro exclusive color. Except, unlike every other year since 2015 (!), the new color brings with it… well, an entirely new Toyota 4Runner. Toyota will be sending out an over-the-air update to all Toyota and Lexus vehicles that will leave its touchscreen infotainment system's bank of menu icons permanently docked on-screen, even while using Apple CarPlay. This will correct a key flaw and complaint with the current system: there's no quick way to escape CarPlay for one of the car's native infotainment menus. For instance, going between Google Maps and satellite radio.

The New York Auto Show, like many other shows over the past few years, has shrunk. But it's still playing host to some interesting reveals, and we even got a few surprises this year. It was dominated by Nissan and Hyundai Motor Group products, but ones running the gamut from affordable cars to flagship SUVs. It was a strange situation of being both quite diverse in reveals, and not at all, depending on how you looked at it. Our favorites of the show are a clear representation of that. Let's go back to the last week of August 2009, eh? «The Final Destination» was the top movie, «American Idol» the top TV show, the Black Eyed Peas claimed the top tune with «I Gotta Feeling,» and the average gallon of gas cost $2.43, which the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says is worth $3.49 today. Oh, and that month, the current, fifth-generation Toyota 4Runner entered production in Japan. As colleague James Riswick alluded to, the 4Runner will be of legal driving age by the time it retires. But now there's a new one not far away, finally close enough to make sense for Toyota to begin the teaser campaign.

Life's always been tough on hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV), and it's only getting tougher thanks to Shell announcing the closure of its retail refilling stations in California. Hydrogen Insight reported that the energy company ran seven stations for consumer FCEV owners, six of them shut down immediately because of «supply complications and other external market factors.» One light-duty retail station in Torrance remains open at the time of writing while Shell tries to find a buyer (that would be the same one, pictured above, that Autoblog editor James Riswick found to be closed due to maintenance and ongoing parts shortages).
