The Grand Tour as we know it is ending. There's only one feature-length special left from Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May and then their off to do other separate projects, leaving automotive television behind. However, like Dr. Frankenstein reviving an unwilling corpse, it seems Amazon Prime, isn't willing to letThe Grand Tour die and is instead interested in bringing it back but with a new trio of hosts, according to Broadcast.
Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May made the move to Amazon years ago, after a dramatic end to their version of Top Gear on the BBC. After more than two decades on the air together, the trio moved to Amazon to start The Grand Tour, but there’s only one special left before they ride off into the sunset. Top Gear continued on with other hosts, but never achieved the chemistry of the original crew, but it now seems a production company will try the same thing with The Grand Tour.
In 2007, Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond embarked on a trip from Nunavut, Canada to the North Magnetic Pole. The special edition was called the Polar Challenge and the team had a pair of 2007 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 3.0-liter diesels heavily modified by Icelandic company Arctic Trucks. A few years later, James May piloted one of these to Iceland’s Eyjafallajökull volcano during the eruption.
There are two more episodes of The Grand Tour on the horizon: one set in Mauritania, which should drop on Amazon Prime Video next month, and another in Zimbabwe, release date to be announced. After that, it sounds like it's over for the iconic trio of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, at least in the business of making extravagant car-themed travel entertainment. If you're wondering why they've called it quits now, Clarkson's left little room for ambiguity in a recent interview.
