Ian Callum is one of the world's best-known car designers, the former styling boss of both Jaguar and Aston Martin. As such his design résumé includes highlights from the DB7 to the i-Pace. Against that list, the Callum Skye is definitely a radical departure. After leaving Jaguar in 2019, Callum founded an eponymous (but capitalized) company named Callum, together with several other former JLR execs. The company's first project was a high-end restomod version of the original Aston Martin Vanquish, one we experienced in 2020. The Callum Skye has been revealed as an all-terrain luxury electric vehicle (EV) from famed automotive designer Ian Callum.
Ian Callum's name has been all over the mobility world since the famous designer left his role as head of Jaguar design in 2019. The Prodrive BRX T1, an off-roader created to compete in the 2021 Dakar Rally, was one of the first outings for his independent consultancy. The company returns to a similar playground with the Callum Skye, a battery-electric 2+2 off-roader that's the first clean-sheet in-house creation to be sold under the consultancy's own brand. Scheduled to begin prototype testing early next year and to go on sale in 2025, Ian Callum said of it, «We always intended to do our own car, and we've gone for this concept because it is not a sports car.»
Ian Callum isn't the first former Aston Martin and Ford designer to launch a car company under his own name. Henrik Fisker was there first in this very narrow category of ex-Aston and Ford car designers who've launched their own brands—bringing us the Fisker Tramonto and Latigo (remember those?) before EVs became commonplace. But Callum is certainly looking to enter the same field while targeting a narrower EV segment, one that hasn't really been addressed by other automakers to date.
