CONFIRMED: Porsche 911 Hybrid Coming This Summer

Ahead of Porsche's annual press conference today, the German automaker has confirmed that the 992.2 facelift of the Porsche 911 is «planned for early summer» and will include a «high-performance hybrid» variant.

«Once again, we are deploying technology in series-production models that we have derived from the world of motorsport,» remarked Porsche CEO Oliver Blume.

Within its 2023 Annual and Sustainability Report, Porsche notes that «each generation of the 911 achieves new milestones in drive technology,» citing examples like the turbocharger, AWD, water cooling, and the PDK dual-clutch transmission, adding that «the next big step» is coming now with an «ultra-sporty hybrid — as seen in racing — for selected derivatives of the 911 model line.»

Since this is a system derived from motorsport, we know that it will not be a plug-in hybrid. That means no charging port and, more importantly, that the new variant will prioritize performance above an all-electric driving range.

Blume already confirmed as much back in 2022, calling attention to the 919 Hybrid program. At the same time, the CEO also said that the hybridized 911 would secure the top spot in the range. This all but confirmed that the 911 GT2 RS is to be electrified, and it won't be the only one. As noted above, «selected derivatives of the 911 model line» will be hybridized, suggesting that more than one 911 will get electric assistance.

Along with continued work in the field of synthetic fuel development, the medium-term future of the combustion-powered Porsche 911 seems secure. «Electric sports cars are a clear priority, but we'll continue to offer combustion engine cars and hybrid drives throughout the period of transformation,» said Blume.

We know that the 718 range is about to become electric — recent spy shots suggest an imminent reveal — but we won't see it for a while. Porsche will host more product launches in 2024 than any other year in its history, confirming that four new launches in various model lines will take place before 2025, but these will not include a new Boxster and Cayman.

These do include the Macan EV, which has already been presented, and the refreshed Taycan and new Taycan Turbo
