Firstly, the nomenclature “CS” refers to “Competition Sport” – a designation given to exclusive BMW M models that can drive themselves to the track on public roads and proceed to set some blistering lap times. In the example of the current generation M3 CS, the sedan is outfitted with more power, unique chassis calibration, and intelligent lightweight construction featuring carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) components. The same can be expected in its coupe counterpart which a recent report in BMW Blog claims will be arriving in May.

With undisclosed sources, the forthcoming model is expected to debut as a high-performance coupe, derived from the recently refreshed M4. Anticipated to be outfitted with the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine, delivering a robust output akin to the M4 CSL—generating 405 kW and 650 N.m and coupled with the brand’s eight-speed automatic transmission. Diverging from its predecessor, the new CS iteration will feature xDrive all-wheel drive, enhancing its traction capabilities.

Following a development trajectory akin to its M3 counterpart, the M4 CS is likely to undergo weight reduction measures, with BMW potentially employing carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic components to trim excess weight from the coupe’s frame. Notably, previous spy images have captured the camouflaged prototype undergoing testing at prominent venues like the Nürburgring, concealing updated fascias and sporting a discreet front splitter and compact trunk-lid spoiler. Based on insights from BMW Blog, the M4 CS is expected to draw cues from the refreshed M4, boasting notable mid-cycle enhancements such as upgraded headlights, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and revamped display screens.
