VW MexiBug7 Is A 10-Second Beetle Armed With Subaru Power

We've seen quite a few engine swaps on a Beetle before, including burly V8s through a South African workshop, but this one is something we have yet to see — a Subaru-powered Volkswagen Beetle called the MexiBug7.

Simon Ferguson and Alex Collins are the minds behind the MexiBug7, using a 2.5-liter flat-four, quad-cam Subaru engine, generating approximately 350 horsepower. The engine has been built for enhanced power, capable of lifting the front wheels at the drag strip, despite its relatively low power (weight distribution and sticky drag tires play a large role in that). So far, it has reached 156 mph, although Ferguson admits the car could go faster still. In the quarter mile, once the front wheels come back down, it'll scamper down the strip in the 10s — far from the measly performance of the original Beetle.

The MexiBug7 features body modifications for speed, such as two massive wings. It also has adjustable gas shocks and coilovers on the front. It has a VW Polo steering column, Golf GTI brakes, custom wiring loom, and a rebuilt gearbox. The guys stuck the (Ford Mustang) radiator at the back behind the rear window to get the car as low to the ground as possible.

The interior has been stripped down to two bucket seats for a focused driving experience. Exterior enhancements, such as added lighting underneath, contribute to its visual appeal.

The MexiBug7 has received awards from the Petrolheadism Live event and recognition from industry legend Richard Rawlins of Gas Monkey Garage, who left his signature on the car's wing. It consistently draws crowds at car meets and events.

The owners plan additional modifications for the MexiBug7 despite acknowledging its current operating limit. The car, though capable, is not destined for pro-mod status as the owners want to keep it from becoming scrap metal. If they can push it to the 9s, they will, but not at the expense of destroying it.

Unsurprisingly, the car doesn't have power steering, assisted brakes, ABS, and airbags, but the silly, nervous grins on the owners' faces are priceless. Despite that, the car has undertaken notable road trips, like a 24-hour journey to Scotland.

The MexiBug7 goes beyond being a fast
