AUSTIN, Texas — Tesla has backed away from an ambitious plan for innovations in gigacasting, its pioneering manufacturing process, according to two sources familiar with the matter, in another sign that the electric-vehicle maker is retrenching amid falling sales and rising competition.
A week after a CarBuzz report that Toyota planned to expand PHEV availability in the U.S. market and possibly offer an electric Toyota Highlander in the near future, Automotive News reports Toyota's pledged $1.4 billion to the Princeton, Indiana plant that builds the current Highlander, Grand Highlander, Sienna minivan, and Lexus TX that's the luxury arm's version of the Grand Highlander. The money will pay for three items at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana (TMMI), the first being the assembly of «an EV on the line that now builds the Sienna and Highlander» beginning in 2026. A Toyota executive told the outlet that the EV in question would be «chassis-based,» excluding the use of a skateboard architecture.
While the Ram 1500 received a significant update, entering its fifth generation in the 2019 model year, the automaker continued selling the older model alongside it under the Ram 1500 Classic name. The Classic, which is only sold in two configurations in the U.S., is leaving the Canadian market, as Ram recently announced that it had stopped building the model for buyers north of the border.

Another day, another automaker deciding that hybrids are a better short-term solution than focusing solely on EVs. Ford, GM, and others made the call months ago, and now, it’s Hyundai’s turn. The South Korean automaker recently confirmed that it would boost hybrid production at its Georgia factory, which was previously destined for life building electric models.
