Junkyard Gem: 1987 Subaru GL 4WD Wagon with 324k miles - autoblog.com - Usa - state Colorado

Junkyard Gem: 1987 Subaru GL 4WD Wagon with 324k miles

When I'm walking the rows of a car graveyard in search of historically significant subjects for this series, a Toyota or Honda needs at least 400,000 miles showing on the odometer for me to consider photographing it based on final mileage alone; discarded Accords and Previas with better than 300k miles are a dime a dozen. With Subaru, however, it's another story; even in Subie-centric Colorado, I don't run across many that drove past the magical 299,999-mile mark. Today we've got one that accomplished that feat, found in rough shape in a Denver self-service yard.

Scrapyard Gem: 2007 Renault Mégane Coupé Cabriolet

During the first decade of our current century, plenty of European car shoppers fell hard for hardtop convertibles based on cheap compact cars. That means that those cars are now easy to find in the scrapyards of the United Kingdom, so I headed over to northern England to document some of them. We've taken a look at a 2006 Peugeot 307 CC and a 2005 Vauxhall Tigra TwinTop from that trip, and now it's the turn of the open-air Renault Mégane

Scrapyard Gem: 2007 Honda FR-V

The 2000s were something of a golden decade for «tall hatchback» MPVs in Europe, and the good news for Japanese manufacturers was that they had plenty of home-market-optimized vehicles designed for space efficiency that could be brought over to compete with the likes of the Renault Modus, Citroën Xsara Picasso and Hyundai Matrix. From my recent trip to the scrapyards of Northern England, here's a discarded example of a versatile Honda that we never saw in North America: the FR-V.

Junkyard Gem: 1984 Honda Accord LX Sedan - autoblog.com - Usa - Japan - state California - state Ohio

Junkyard Gem: 1984 Honda Accord LX Sedan

Honda is now on the 11th generation of Accord since the first ones hit our shores as 1976 models. Those introductory cars were all hatchbacks, but the first-generation Accord sedan appeared here for the 1978 model year. When the bigger second-generation Accord showed up as a 1982 model, a four-door sedan version remained part of the lineup. Production of the second-gen Accord continued through 1985; these reliable but rust-prone cars have all but disappeared by now, but I've found a reasonably solid example in a self-service yard near Denver.

Junkyard Gem: 1969 Walker Power Truck

The sparsely populated and remote state of Wyoming has never been known for vehicle manufacturing, although Laramie saw its first locally-built horseless carriage hit its streets in 1898. You never know what you'll find in a junkyard, though, and I managed to spot a genuine Wyoming-built vehicle in a self-service yard just south of the Denver city limits: a Walker Power Truck utility vehicle.

Junkyard Gem: 2012 Fiat 500 Sport - autoblog.com - Usa - Italy

Junkyard Gem: 2012 Fiat 500 Sport

Fiat left the United States after selling its last Stradas, 124 Sport Spiders and X1/9s as 1982 models, taking Lancia with it. Malcolm Bricklin continued importing the 124 Sport Spider and X1/9 (with Pininfarina and Bertone badging) for a few more years, but it just wasn't the same for American fans of the venerable Italian manufacturer. Fast-forward to Chrysler's Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009 and Fiat's investment in the company and it wasn't long before the announcement came that Fiat was returning to our shores. The first Fabbrica Italiana Automobil di Torino product to hit our streets as part of that deal was the 500, which debuted as a 2012 model. That's serious automotive history, which is what this series is all about, so I have documented this first-year 500 in a Denver car graveyard.

Scrapyard Gem: 2008 SEAT Altea - autoblog.com - Usa - Britain - Spain

Scrapyard Gem: 2008 SEAT Altea

The mighty Volkswagen Group Empire has absorbed quite a few storied brands over the decades, from Porsche to Bentley to Scout, but you won't see the products of one of its biggest subsidiaries on American streets. That's SEAT, whose products are common sights all over Western Europe. In order to find used-up SEATs, your best bet is to travel to junkyards on the other side of the Atlantic, which I did recently. Today's Junkyard Scrapyard Gem is an Altea compact MPV, found in a self-service boneyard in Yorkshire, England.

Junkyard Gem: 2006 Volkswagen GTI

Remember when Volkswagen of America ran its «Unpimp ze Auto» series of television commercials (Peter Stormare ftw! -Hurd), showing furious and presumably fast tuner cars (a Mitsubishi Eclipse, Honda Civic and Ford Focus) being destroyed by a Swede representing the engineers of Deutschland? Let's all watch them again, because they never get old even after 18 years.
