More Affordable Bajaj Chetak Variant To Be Launched In May 2024

We have known for quite some time now that Bajaj Auto is working on a more affordable variant of the Bajaj Chetak. And now, the manufacturer’s Executive Director, Rakesh Sharma, has revealed in a recent post-earnings call that the new variant will be launched in the current quarter (i.e. April to June 2024).

Although Rakesh Sharma didn’t exactly specify in which month of the current quarter the variant will be launched, we expect it to be during the month of May 2024. He also mentioned that the upcoming variant will be more affordable than the current variants.

The new variant was spotted last year with a new swingarm and a hub-mounted motor instead of the mid-mounted motor seen in the Urbane and Premium variants. The hub-mounted motor will help Bajaj in keeping the costs down and we think the upcoming electric scooter’s price could be around the Rs 1 lakh mark.

In other news, the Bajaj Chetak has been one of the highest-selling electric scooters for the last few months. The EV maker sold 13,620 units of the Chetak during the month of February 2024 and 1,03,763 units were sold between April 2023 and February 2024, according to SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) sales data. Thus, the introduction of a more affordable variant will allow Bajaj to further build upon the Chetak’s high sales figure.

Based on the information provided by Rakesh Sharma, it is evident that the upcoming variant will sit below the Chetak Urbane in the lineup and will probably be priced around Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom including EMPS 2024 subsidy, Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024). Its rivals will be the Ola S1 X, Ather 450S and TVS iQube.
