First Suzuki Jimny five-door arrives in Australia, pricing due December

The boss of Suzuki Australia has shared an image of the first Jimny five-door to roll out onto local roads, ahead of official pricing and specifications becoming available next month.

In a post on the ‘New Suzuki Jimny (JB74) Australia’ owners group on social media platform Facebook, the local General Manager Michael Pachota uploaded a photo of the five-door Jimny – now known as the Jimny XL – wearing Victorian number plates.

According to the VicRoads database, the Suzuki Jimny was registered on November 14 – wearing ‘JBOXXL’ personalised number plates, referencing the small 4x4’s ‘JBOX’ nickname and now-confirmed ‘XL’ designation for five-door variants in Australia.

While Suzuki previously said pricing and specifications for the Jimny XL would be released in November, it has now confirmed the information will be available on December 5 – just a handful of weeks before customer deliveries are due to begin between January and March 2024.

In September, the car-maker claimed it held more than 1500 pre-orders for the Jimny XL, which will be produced for Australia in India – rather than Japan as with the locally-delivered three-door Jimny.

The Suzuki Jimny XL will be powered by the same non-turbo 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine from its three-door sibling, mated to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive system.

Despite sharing similar equipment to the three-door model, it is expected the Jimny XL will incur a price premium owing to its larger size.

At present, the three-door Suzuki Jimny is priced from $30,490 plus on-road costs in ‘Lite’ manual guise, while the flagship GLX automatic starts from $33,490 plus on-road costs.
