An electric van reaching speeds above 300km/h has broken the unofficial lap record at Mount Panorama, Bathurst.
With endurance racing legend Romain Dumas at the wheel, the 2000hp Ford Supervan 4.2 clocked a time of 1:56.28 to set a new benchmark by just over three tenths of a second.
The 2024 Bathurst 12 Hour takes place this Sunday at the Mount Panorama circuit where several manufacturers are gunning for glory with lap record attempts in the lead-up – including a tweaked race car and a wild electric van from Ford.
The Ford SuperVan 4.2 – an electric Transit-inspired race car with close to 1500kW – will be demonstrated at next month’s 2024 Australian Formula One Grand Prix at Albert Park, Melbourne.
The Ford E-Transit SuperVan 4.2 is heading to Australia and will hit the nation’s most famous racetrack, Mount Panorama, during the Repco Bathurst 12 Hour race weekend.Roughly six months after conquering the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the all-electric demonstrator model will make its debut at the Repco Bathurst 12 Hour weekend, with Romain Dumas behind the wheel for a series of demonstration runs. The SuperVan will continue to be showcased until the following weekend for the Thrifty Bathurst 500 Supercars season opener, where it will also be on display.“Driving SuperVan 4.2 is always a huge privilege and after the successful outing at Pikes Peak, I am delighted that the Ford Performance team keep finding new and exciting ways to push the envelope,” Dumas said.
The latest electric Transit Custom in Ford’s line of iconic ‘SuperVan’ demonstration vehicles will make its Australian debut next month, completing laps around the famous Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst.
Bathurst’s Mount Panorama circuit becomes the next stop on SuperVan 4’s world tour, following a class win at the Pike’s Peak hillclimb and debut at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2022.
In early December Porsche took a highly modified 911 Carrera 4S to the Ojos del Salado volcano in Chile to break the world record for highest altitude driven by a vehicle. The car, driven by three-time Le Mans winner Romain Dumas, had a myriad of rock crawling-specific mods to help it up the mountain. But none were more interesting than its steer-by-wire system, the first to appear in any new Porsche product.
