De Tomaso P72 Carbon Chassis And Suspension Are Engineering Art

De Tomaso has unveiled the P72's stunning monocoque chassis and suspension layout, which it describes as production-ready, and several improvements have been made.

It's been quite the journey for the revived Italian brand. The monocoque — itself a work of art — has been through a lengthy development process to get it to this stage.

The passenger cell showcases the P72's elegant lines, but the carbon fiber chassis is still a thing of beauty in a practical way. Functionality and driving dynamics aside, it's much more attractive than the advanced monofuselage underpinning the Lamborghini Revuelto.

It's worth mentioning the P72 shares its platform with the Apollo Intensa Emozione, but as we're about to see, it wasn't left alone.

This is the final iteration of the production-ready monocoque and suspension geometry, having undergone several changes over the past year in an effort to «unify the key structural components of the P72, merging the glasshouse and outer shells,» doing so without any connecting joints or adhesive bonds, saving additional weight. This carbon fiber unibody reminds us of the Bugatti Bolide and its monocoque, and like that car, such diligence in maximizing sturdiness will surely translate to a phenomenal driving experience.

Following feedback from those who had experienced the pre-production cars, De Tomaso has lowered the driver's seating position by 80 mm, creating more legroom. In addition, the sill has been reduced in height by 120 mm, making it easier to get in and out of the car without scratching that gorgeous carbon fiber. As the shifter of the P72 demonstrates, appearances are important.

The entire suspension has been revised and refined, bringing «notable enhancements to road compliance, longevity, and mechanical grip.» As part of this, the double wishbones have been repackaged for improved lateral grip during extreme driving while reducing camber gain in corners. This only comes from motorsport experience.

De Tomaso has sourced components from GT4 racecars for its new suspension bearings and says that geometry refinements have improved front and rear balance, while the improved packaging of the steering rack is touted to provide
