Coming back with noticeably increased dimensions and a prominent coupe silhouette displayed in its exterior design, the new BMW X2 demonstrates a significant leap forward in development. This latest iteration is strikingly larger, marking the largest X2 ever produced by the company. It has extended in length by a substantial 194 mm, now reaching 4 554 mm, with an additional 21 mm in width at 1 845 mm and a height increase of 64 mm, reaching 1 590 mm. Moreover, boasting a lengthened wheelbase of 2 692 mm, BMW asserts there’s more room for passengers and additional luggage space as well.

This enlarged X2 exists because it’s stepping up to fill the gap left by the X4, which isn’t getting updated until 2028. The new X3 and its sibling, the iX3 (also called the Neue Klasse X), are hitting the scene soon, but the X4 won’t show up until after the X3 gets a facelift. So, in the meantime, the X2 is growing to pick up the slack

Within the local lineup, two versions will be available. At the top end is the M35i, powered by a 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering 221 kW and 400 N.m of torque to all four wheels. Paired with a seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. On the other hand, the X2 sDrive18i employs the brand’s turbocharged 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine, delivering 115 kW of power and 230 N.m of torque. This setup enables a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 9.0 seconds and a top speed of 213 km/h.

The new BMW X2 and BMW iX2 will be manufactured flexibly on a single assembly line at the BMW Group Plant Regensburg. BMW confirms that the BMW iX2 won’t be available in South Africa. In the third quarter of 2024, the global lineup will be expanded with a second fully electric variant and another diesel-powered model. The X2 sDrive18d is equipped with a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbodiesel
