Nissan considering Xterra revival; 'it's got to be authentic'

Update: We were looking at a teaser video Nissan released as part of their press conference laying out its overall strategy. The video shows a variety of upcoming designs, along with a couple that have been revealed including the Sakura kei car from the Tokyo show, and the Kicks from the New York show. For a brief moment, we can spot a very boxy vehicle with big, tubular roof rails, a vertical tail, truck-y lights, and looking very closely, the little hatch bump that's synonymous with the Xterra (which was an alcove for a first aid kit on the old models). We're pretty confident this is a new Xterra. We've included the screenshot from the video at the top, as well as the video itself immediately below. We've also updated some of the text to reflect this new finding.

The Nissan Ariya was nearly the new Murano

NEW YORK — In addition to providing thoughts on a future Xterra while at the New York International Auto Show, Nissan Americas Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer Ponz Pandikuthira also talked with us a bit about EVs, and more specifically model lines and nameplates. We've seen a few strategies ranging from almost completely new and parallel model lines (such as Hyundai's Ioniqs and Kia's EV#s), to reusing old names on still similarly parallel models (such as Chevy's Equinox, Blazer and Silverado EVs), and of course blends of the two. So far, Nissan has gone with the separate model route with Leaf and Ariya, but that may not be as much the case in the future.

Nissan designer Alfonso Albaisa: 'There is no longer a face of Nissan'

At the New York International Auto Show, we had an opportunity to chat with Nissan's Senior Vice President for Global Design, Alfonso Albaisa, about a variety of things related to car design. And naturally it focused on Nissan, and he shared a number of things that have us excited to see where Nissan is headed over the next several years. Particularly, it seems like Nissan may buck a couple of trends in car design of the last few decades.

2024 New York International Auto Show Editors' Top 5 Picks

The New York Auto Show, like many other shows over the past few years, has shrunk. But it's still playing host to some interesting reveals, and we even got a few surprises this year. It was dominated by Nissan and Hyundai Motor Group products, but ones running the gamut from affordable cars to flagship SUVs. It was a strange situation of being both quite diverse in reveals, and not at all, depending on how you looked at it. Our favorites of the show are a clear representation of that. And another interesting observation, only one of the picks was significantly electrified. Scroll down to see the best reveals of the New York Auto Show,.

The 2024 New York Auto Show press preview is in the bag and the public show has begun, and that means only one thing: Our work here is done. But really, we've been done since about mid-morning on Wednesday. As you'll see from the paltry selection of galleries below, the 2024 New York Auto Show wasn't much of one. And what there was? Well, in a word, it was Hyundai.

Nissan considering Xterra revival; 'it's got to be authentic'

The revival and revitalization of classic off-roaders is proving to be very popular with buyers, and highly profitable with automakers, particularly with models like the Defender, Bronco and revamped Land Cruiser. There are a couple of exceptions that haven't seemed to fully capitalize on this trend, with one noteworthy example being Nissan. Potentially its most well-known off-roader, the Frontier-based Xterra, has been absent since the 2015 model year, nearly a decade ago. But after talking with Nissan Americas Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer Ponz Pandikuthira, it seems we may see a revival, yet.
