EV range anxiety? Gas vehicles dwarf EVs on the average number of miles driven

Americans bought EVs in record numbers last year, with Cox Automotive reporting 1.2 million sales in 2023. They still only make up a single-digit percentage of the overall auto market here, and they are clearly being used in ways that are different from gasoline-powered cars. A recent study from iSeeCars found that gas vehicles saw the most mileage between November 2022 and April 2023, with EVs being driven the least.

EVs are the most expensive vehicles to operate over 1,000 miles, according to iSeeCars

It’s no secret that charging an electric vehicle is often less expensive than fueling a gas car, but many don’t think about the higher purchase prices. A recent iSeeCars study showed that people tend to drive EVs much less, making their cost per mile much higher than that of internal combustion vehicles.

580 miles, 0 problems. How I drove an EV to Chicago stress-free

Just before the Chicago Auto Show, I messaged Road Test Editor Zac Palmer to ask if I could get a test car to drive out to the event. He came back with two options that were coming in that week: a Mazda CX-90 PHEV and a Kia EV9. Keep in mind, the Chicago Show is in February, and the trip from Detroit takes place mostly in southern Michigan or northern Indiana, depending on your route. Either way, it would most likely be cold. And the distance would be around 290 miles one way, or 10 more than the estimated maximum range of the EV9 Land AWD offered.

The 30 fastest-charging EVs in 2024

Even if you don't suffer from range anxiety, knowing how far your electric car can travel on a charge is obviously incredibly important. Maybe most of your driving is short-range trips, and you charge at home every night, happily passing by gas stations and public EV chargers alike, except for those rare road trips. Or maybe you often take regional drives in your EV, and are familiar with the nearby charging infrastructure. Either way, no one loves spending time at the public charging station. If you really want to avoid public charging at all costs, you'll want one of the EVs with the longest range (and if cost is your biggest concern, check out our list of the cheapest EVs available). But if you want to minimize the amount of time you're waiting at those stations, you'll also want to make sure you have one of the fastest-charging EVs on the market.

The worst cities and states to own an EV in 2024

Before you purchase an all-electric vehicle, where you live could impact your decision. A study from iSeeCars.com showed the worst cities and states to own an EV, particularly if you can't charge at home — these are the areas with the fewest public chargers across the U.S. The absolute fewest were in Louisville, Kentucky. That city only has 412 chargers. Rounding out the worst three are Birmingham, Alabama, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The report also lists the best states for owning an EV.

EVs vs Hybrids vs Plug-in Hybrids: What's the difference? - autoblog.com

EVs vs Hybrids vs Plug-in Hybrids: What's the difference?

If you're looking for a greener, more efficient mode of transportation, there are loads of options with a variety of different drivetrains. There are partly electrified cars such as hybrids and plug-in hybrids, and then there are fully electric cars. That selection is great, but it can also be a little overwhelming in figuring out which electric vehicle is best for you. So we're going to break down what each vehicle is, and what situations each are most suited to. We'll even cover those differences both in text below, and the video at top. And even though the video above is a little dated in terms of available models, electric ranges and other specs, but still does a great job of explaining the mechanical differences and what that means to how they drive and how much fuel they'll save.

Cheapest electric cars in 2024

Just a few years ago, the number of available affordable electric vehicles was significantly smaller. Listing the EVs under $50,000 for 2024, though, is a more laborious undertaking, as the list has grown despite the discontinuation of a couple models, requiring all your fingers and toes to count them. Some of these models haven’t hit the market as of this writing, but will be arriving some time this year.
