Junkyard Gem: 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid Sedan

Honda was the first car manufacturer to sell a production hybrid-electric car in the United States, with the Insight beating the Prius to showrooms here by nearly a year. Few remembered that a couple of years later, once the Prius became a big sales success and even after Honda introduced the Civic Hybrid as a 2003 model. Honda upped its hybrid game for the 2005 model year, when the first Accord Hybrids appeared here. Here's one of those cars, found in a Denver-area self-service car graveyard recently.

Junkyard Gem: 2007 Audi S8

If you want to find examples of punitive automotive depreciation, look no further than the European luxury sedans in your local Ewe Pullet car graveyard. How about a Mercedes-Benz S600, which sold new for an inflation-adjusted $282,544? Or a BMW 745i and its $114,895 price tag in today's money? Big, powerful Audi sedans face the Depreciation Grim Reaper as well, and today's Junkyard Gem was the one of the most expensive 2007 models Americans could buy with the logo representing Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer on its snout.

Junkyard Gem: 2005 Honda Accord, Hello Kitty Edition

When you're a young city-dweller and your car is a generic 20-year-old sedan with the base engine, what do you do? You personalize it, of course, and that's what the final owner of this Accord LX did. An unfortunate rear-end collision sent this car to a Denver car graveyard, giving us an illustrative snapshot of a place and time in popular automotive culture.

Scrapyard Gem: 2008 Alfa Romeo Spider 2.2 JTS

Alfa Romeo departed our shores after the final 164s and Spider Veloces were sold here as 1995 models, then returned for the 2015 model year with the 4C. Thanks to its position in the mighty Stellantis Empire, the current American-market Alfa Romeo lineup looks quite a bit like the Italian-market one, but we missed out on some interesting machinery during our Alfa-deprived 1996-2014 period. One of those cars was the 2006-2010 Spider, and I found a discarded example in an Italian/French specialty breaker's yard near Leeds, England during a recent trip.

Junkyard Gem: 2006 Hummer H3 SUV - autoblog.com - Usa - state Colorado - China

Junkyard Gem: 2006 Hummer H3 SUV

After General Motors bought the rights to the Hummer brand from AM General in 1999, it continued to sell the civilianized versions of the military HMMWV that was made famous after appearing in the heavily televised Operation Desert Storm. The Hummer H1 (as it became known) never sold in large numbers, but The General decided to make everyman Hummers based on existing GM truck platforms. The Silverado-based H2 came first, debuting as a 2003 model, followed by the Colorado-based H3 as a 2006 model. Here's one of those first-year H3s, found in a Denver self-service car graveyard recently.

Junkyard Gem: 2006 Mitsubishi Raider DuroCross 4WD - autoblog.com - Usa - state Colorado - Mexico - county Dodge

Junkyard Gem: 2006 Mitsubishi Raider DuroCross 4WD

Chrysler began selling Mitsubishi Triton pickups with Dodge D-50 and Plymouth Arrow badging in the 1979 model year, followed by the Mitsubishi Pajero aka Montero with Dodge Raider badges for 1987 through 1989. That Raider name sounded so good that Mitsubishi Motors decided to revive it when they began selling a new pickup based on the Dodge Dakota in the United States. Today's Junkyard Gem is a first-year Mitsubishi Raider, found in a Denver car graveyard recently.

Junkyard Gem: 2003 Subaru Baja - autoblog.com - Usa - state Colorado - state Louisiana

Junkyard Gem: 2003 Subaru Baja

As our reviewer asked when writing about the 2003 Baja: Remember the Subaru BRAT? Yes, from the 1978 through 1987 model years, Subaru sold a version of the Leone with a pickup bed in the United States, and memories of the BRAT remained fond even after all the lawsuits over injuries suffered by passengers riding in the Chicken Tax-avoiding jumpseats. That's why it seemed to make sense for Subaru to give the BRAT treatment to the much larger Legacy; today's Junkyard Gem is one of those first-year Baja pickups.

Scrapyard Gem: 2007 Renault Mégane Coupé Cabriolet

During the first decade of our current century, plenty of European car shoppers fell hard for hardtop convertibles based on cheap compact cars. That means that those cars are now easy to find in the scrapyards of the United Kingdom, so I headed over to northern England to document some of them. We've taken a look at a 2006 Peugeot 307 CC and a 2005 Vauxhall Tigra TwinTop from that trip, and now it's the turn of the open-air Renault Mégane

Scrapyard Gem: 2007 Honda FR-V

The 2000s were something of a golden decade for «tall hatchback» MPVs in Europe, and the good news for Japanese manufacturers was that they had plenty of home-market-optimized vehicles designed for space efficiency that could be brought over to compete with the likes of the Renault Modus, Citroën Xsara Picasso and Hyundai Matrix. From my recent trip to the scrapyards of Northern England, here's a discarded example of a versatile Honda that we never saw in North America: the FR-V.
