The Best Record-Breaking Timepieces From the World's Biggest Watch Show

After two years of the kind of exuberance and endeavor that brought a Rolex emoji watch, colored lab-grown diamonds, 3D-printed gold, light-sucking cases, and even a Stormtrooper metaverse watch, 2024's Watches and Wonders—the annual trade show of the international watch and jewelry industry—feels positively tame in comparison.

Hackers Found a Way to Open Any of 3 Million Hotel Keycard Locks in Seconds

When thousands of security researchers descend on Las Vegas every August for what's come to be known as “hacker summer camp,” the back-to-back Black Hat and Defcon hacker conferences, it's a given that some of them will experiment with hacking the infrastructure of Vegas itself, the city's elaborate array of casino and hospitality technology. But at one private event in 2022, a select group of researchers were actually invited to hack a Vegas hotel room, competing in a suite crowded with their laptops and cans of Red Bull to find digital vulnerabilities in every one of the room's gadgets, from its TV to its bedside VoIP phone.

Keurig’s New Coffee Pods Are Completely Compostable—but You’ll Need a New Machine to Use Them

Coffee machine maker Keurig just unveiled a new plastic-free, metal-free compostable coffee pod called the K-Round. This new pod is a little puck of coffee compressed and sealed in a plant-based, food-grade shell of cellulose and starch. There’s no little aluminum tab to pull off at the top, no plastic cup or internal filter to dispose of afterward. Just a puck of coffee held together by a food-safe coating of seaweed.

2025 Nissan GT-R could be final R35 before retirement

Now that the Kia Stinger, Audi R8, and Audit TT are gone, we're pretty sure the Nissan GT-R takes the crown as the nameplate with the longest tenure on death row. According to a story in Japanese buff book Mag X (translated), we might know Godzilla's execution date on March 14. The report says that's when Nissan will announce the 2025 model year is the last for the once-titanic coupe, and that the automaker is making just 1,500 of them to emphasize the final flourish. Mag X didn't specify this as a global extinction event; however, it did write that «the manufacturer explained to dealers, 'We have decided to discontinue production because there will be many parts that cannot be manufactured in the future.'» If «many parts» can't be made, that sounds like a once-and-for-all issue; it's not like Nissan is sourcing huge batches of market-specific parts for a vehicle that hasn't been on sale in Australia since 2021, in Europe since 2022, that skipped the U.S. market in 2022, and that sold 390 units here last year. In Japan, the car's largest market, the Nissan web site indicates «Orders for the 2024 NISSAN GT-R model have been discontinued as the number of orders has reached the planned sales volume.»
